Designing an arrow hand gun

Using scrap parts from work this thing is going to be crude but hopefully effective. Instead of using bow type instrument for my tension I am using a compression spring. This greatly reduces size. The spring I have picked is about 7” long and when my ~170# of body weight is on it, it is only compressed around 1/3 of its compression. I can only speculate what the poundage is at full compression.

I have a way, not that fast but gets the job done in about 10 seconds, to compress the spring (100% sure will work). A way to keep it from blowing its self apart when fired (about 90% sure will work), but not sure how many shots it can handle.

Instead of a string there will be steel holding a steel pin to notch the arrow. Plan on using a foot long piece of 5/16 steel hydraulic tubing for my bolt. I think this is about the right size for a field point. Figured this would make a cheap one shot bolt. Do not what to buy any commercial bolt because I do not think they will hold up to the launch. 100% sure of that, unless there is something out there I do not know about.

Now for the trigger, this is where the design gets a little……………. iffy. It is a fixed trigger not allowing for partial retraction of the spring for test (about 50% sure will work). But no worries have two safeties. One is the safety, which if the trigger is done wrong will become the trigger. The other is a stop to keep the spring from traveling to far.

The only things left are designing the rail for the bolt to launch from. I know length is proportional to accuracy but my methods are crude and I want to keep it about a foot. I do not have high expectations at this point and hope to keep it in a paper plate at 20 yards. Besides that I need a bushing but I think I can find the material to make it from Grainger. And a couple items from Carr Lane Mfg. for my force dampener and I can start piecing this beast together.

Well and time to do it.:hmmm:

My wife says that since she loves me she will set me free to go bow hunting. If I come back I am hers……….that is a big IF!
