DIY Colorado Elk Hunt

5 posts in this topic

I lived in Colorado for 35 years in the Aspen (don't go there, full of tree hugger types) area. Glenwood Springs is hunter friendly. It's west of he divide. I hunted mainly in Unit 43 but also 33, 34, 35, 44, 45 and 444.

I had fair success most years. I almost always applied for a Cow tag. Less hunting pressure, not quite as big as the bulls. makes it easier to get the meat out and the cows are usually not as stressed from the rut so the meat seemed a bit better.

Lots of people self guide the area. You better be in shape, the thin air can be brutal. Getting in a few days early to acclimate and scout would be a good idea.

There is a lot of public lands in the area.

Here's a link to a unit map and topo's can be found easy enough.
