Cabela's boycotting Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show over gun flap Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show won't allow display

Recommended Posts

Anyone planning to attend the annual Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show in Harrisburg next month for the chance to rub elbows with hunting celebrities like Lee and Tiffany Lakoski, or Ralph and Vicki Cianciarulo, may need to rethink those plans. As of Monday, the two celebrity hunting couples, along with major sponsor Cabela\'s and dozens of other vendors, have pulled their appearances from the largest consumer-related outdoors show in North America due to a new policy by the show\'s organizer.Reed Exhibitions of the United Kingdom announced last week that because of the \"current climate that may attract negative attention,\" it won\'t allow the display or sale of assault or assault-style weapons and large-capacity ammunition clips at the Feb. 2-10 show at the State Farm Show Arena.Because of the perceived affront to their Second Amendment rights, vendors began pulling out of the event, which features more than 1,200 exhibitors of hunting, fishing and game field preparation and cooking, as well as boating, camping, bird-watching, and conservation pursuits.SUNDAYS: Follow the Eagles during the game! Action story updates, game and fan pictures, plus video reports @ themorningcall.com.Facebook and Twitter have been ablaze with comments, as have hunting website bulletin boards and chat rooms. More than 60 vendors were boycotting the event as of Monday afternoon, according to MyNortheastOutdoors.com.Rick Weaknecht of Weaknecht\'s Archery in Kutztown, the longest-running exhibitor at the show, is taking a wait-and-see approach. John Annoni of Allentown-based Camp Compass and 2 Million Bullets has pulled his booth. Blitz TV, which was set to feature Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Trent Cole, also joined the boycott.Reed\'s offices were closed on Monday, but the group is expected to make another statement Tuesday. The Reed decision came while the company runs the annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas, the largest outdoors retail show in North America. That show features fully automatic weapons and semiautomatic weapons in the modern sporting arms class, the classification that features weapons like the rifle used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Conn. The National Rifle Association joined the list of protesters late last week, issuing a stern rebuke of Reed\'s decision on the Pennsylvania show.\"We encourage Reed Exhibitions to reconsider their position,\" the statement reads in part, adding, \"The NRA\'s future participation in the Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show will be determined by Reed Exhibitions\' actions in response to the concerns raised by the NRA, the outdoor industry, and America\'s law-abiding gun owners.\"Cabela\'s, which has a store near Hamburg, runs a huge indoor store at the show. The company decided to join the boycott Sunday, sending shock waves through the hunting community.\"Due to recent changes made by Reed Exhibitions regarding the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show, Cabela\'s will no longer sponsor this year\'s event,\" the outdoors retailer posted on its Facebook page. \"After careful consideration regarding Cabela\'s business practices, and the feelings of our customers, Cabela\'s will, unfortunately, not have a presence at the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show.\"Cabela\'s spokesman Harold Luther said the store will have no other comment.Weaknecht\'s Archery, which has exhibited for 50 straight years and is the show\'s oldest exhibitor, hasn\'t made a decision yet.\"I don\'t know what\'s going to happen,\" Rick Weaknecht said Monday. \"I have to see what all the manufacturers I represent are going to do, but I should probably know by the end of the week. I\'d have to start setting up by [Jan. 30]. I don\'t know why [Reed] would take that position. This is a hunting show. I\'ve been in touch with them about changing their decision, because this isn\'t good for anybody.\"Official attendance tallies haven\'t been issued for the last 15 years, but Weaknecht said when they were, estimates placed the daily crowd at more than 100,000, and the show is bigger now with more floor space and a huge fishing hall added, as well as a second archery hall.Annoni, an Allentown middle school science teacher and founder of Camp Compass, an outdoors-oriented outreach program for inner-city youth, as well as 2 Million Bullets, an anti gun-violence mission, pulled out of the show for mixed reasons. He was set to have a booth and staff it with up to six people a day, and have inner-city kids on hand to relate their experiences.\"There are people who are going to show up in Harrisburg and not even be in the loop as to what\'s happening,\" Annoni said. \"What I\'m afraid of is that someone on the left or someone on the right will start arguing and drive a wedge between us instead of it being a unified sportsman event. The last thing we need is two of our own going at it, and our kids getting caught in the middle because some guy or woman confuses the message we\'re portraying and calls us names.\"Annoni said instead of a boycott, he\'s in favor of a silent protest like having everyone aware of the situation wearing orange to signify their opposition. But Annoni doesn\'t agree with Reed\'s policy either. He said not displaying the modern sporting arms — the vernacular supported by gun rights advocates — allows a crowbar into the door of gun ownership.\"Once the crowbar is in, the door gets open in a hurry,\" he said. The Second Amendment issue for gun owners comes down to educating the public on guns, Annoni said, and there needs to be a more humanizing side to the statements being made by organizations like the NRA.\"Whoever called for the boycott should have taken another second to think about how to get an effective point across without hurting other outdoor family members,\" Annoni said. \"It\'s clear that if we don\'t attend, we are hurting those that walk with us in an attempt to show those who are anti-gun that we are united and that our position is legal and constitutionally correct.\"The Pennsylvania Outdoors Writers Association asked members if the organization should take a stand on the issue. Former Morning Call outdoors writer Tom Fegely and his wife, Betty Lou, said Reed should keep politics out of it.SUNDAYS: Follow the Eagles during the game! Action story updates, game and fan pictures, plus video reports @ themorningcall.com.\"Reed\'s stance on what weapons to allow or not allow is their choice,\" the Fegelys wrote. \"It is not a matter a nonprofit media organization should take a stance for or against. Let the bylaws and mission statements be your guide and definitely not get into a politically charged moment.\"gary.blockus@mcall.com610-820-6782REED EXHIBITIONS STATEMENTThe Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show is a unique celebration of the authentic hunting and fishing traditions that are cherished by millions of Americans and their families. We are proud to celebrate these pastimes by featuring 1,200 exhibitors offering a diverse range of products from outfitters to fishing boats and RVs, from archery to art and from clothes to cabins. As a hunting-focused event, we welcome exhibitors who wish to showcase products and firearms that serve the traditional needs of the sport. Clearly, we strongly support the 2nd Amendment. However, this year we have made the decision not to include certain products that in the current climate may attract negative attention that would distract from the strong focus on hunting and fishing at this family-oriented event and possibly disrupt the broader positive experience of our guests.ESS is proud to participate in the preservation and promotion of the rich hunting and fishing tradition passed from generation to generation by American families.Copyright © 2013, The Morning CallAs of Sunday, this is a list of others that have bailed out of the show....2 Million BulletsAlaska’s Ravencroft LodgeArrowhead OutdoorsAthens ArcheryAtlantic TacticalBlaine Anthony, The Bear WhispererBob MercierBoondock OutdoorsCabela’sCanCookerCross Canyon ArmsCutting Edge BulletsDead RingerDirect Action Tactical FirearmsDomari Nolo Defense ConsultingDominator 365Droptine OutfittersDuckWater BoatsFirearms Industry Consulting GroupForbes Turkey CallsFred Eichler – Fulldraw OutfittersFull Circle OutdoorsHookHuntHunters and Guides ConnectionKinsey’s OutdoorsKeystone Country StoreLancaster Archery SupplyMajor League BowhunterMidwest Whitetail AdventuresMountain Dog ChewsNature Blinds, LLCNorthern Hideaway OutfittersNorthern Outdoor LodgeNorthern Wilderness OutfittersOpen Season TVOutdoor EdgeOutdoorsNative.comTrop Gun ShopRalph & Vicki Cianciarulo – Archers ChoiceRevolution HuntingRougeaux’s TaxidermyStokerized StabilizersThe WarmbagWhitetail BossesWired OutdoorsWoodcock Limited of PennsylvaniaWyvern CreationsX-Stand TreestandsZook Cabins

Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show - Update - January 24, 2013Reed Exhibitions has decided to postpone, for now, the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show given the controversy surrounding its decision to limit the sale or display of modern sporting rifles (also called ARs) at the event. The show was scheduled to take place February 2-10 in Harrisburg, PA.“Our original decision not to include certain products in the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show this year was made in order to preserve the event’s historical focus on the hunting and fishing traditions enjoyed by American families,” said Chet Burchett, Reed Exhibitions President for the Americas. “In the current climate, we felt that the presence of MSRs would distract from the theme of hunting and fishing, disrupting the broader experience of our guests. This was intended simply as a product decision, of the type event organizers need to make every day.“It has become very clear to us after speaking with our customers that the event could not be held because the atmosphere of this year’s show would not be conducive to an event that is designed to provide family enjoyment. It is unfortunate that in the current emotionally charged atmosphere this celebratory event has become overshadowed by a decision that directly affected a small percentage of more than 1,000 exhibits showcasing products and services for those interested in hunting and fishing.“ESS has long been proud to participate in the preservation and promotion of hunting and fishing traditions, and we hope that as the national debate clarifies, we will have an opportunity to consider rescheduling the event when the time is right to focus on the themes it celebrates.”
